What is a foreign body in the ear canal?
The ear canal is a sensitive passageway leading to the eardrum. It is not uncommon for something to become caught in the ear, and it can be uncomfortable.
For hearing aid users, a dome or tip can sometimes come off and stay stuck in the canal. If it is not removed, it can cause pain and may damage the eardrum.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms vary with the type of object and how long it has been there.
- A feeling that something is in the ear
- Discomfort or pain in the ear
- Muffled or reduced hearing
- A hearing aid dome or tip that cannot be found after removing your device
How is it treated?
See a doctor if something becomes stuck in your ear, and avoid trying to remove it yourself with cotton buds, tweezers or other tools, which can push it further in or injure the canal.

When should I see an audiologist or doctor?
Get it checked as soon as you notice an object in the ear, particularly a hearing aid dome. Removal is usually simpler when it is not left in place.

What should I do if something is stuck in my ear?

Is removal painful?
Microsuction is generally well tolerated, and most people describe a gentle suction sensation and some noise. If the ear is already sore from the object, we take care and explain each step. Tell us at any point if you are uncomfortable.
Can a stuck object damage my eardrum?
It can. A retained hearing aid dome or other object can cause pain and may damage the eardrum if it is not removed. That is why it is worth having it checked and removed rather than waiting to see if it comes out.
Do I need a referral?
