FOREIGN BODY OBSTRUCTIONS IN THE EAR CANAL

It’s not uncommon to experience the discomfort of having something caught in the ears. Most foreign objects get stuck in the ear canal, the narrow passageway that leads to the eardrum. The ear canal is very sensitive, so if there is something in it, you will likely feel it.

For hearing aid users, on occasions the hearing aid dome or ear tip may get stuck in the ear canal. It is important to have it removed as it may cause ear pain, discomfort and irritability over time and may also damage the tympanic membrane (eardrum) if pushed in too far.

If something gets stuck in your ear, you should see a doctor. If there are no symptoms and the clinic is closed, waiting until the next day for an evaluation is usually acceptable.

Your doctor may want to see you in their office, or they may refer you to the emergency room or a specialist, depending on the resources available in your area.

Foreign bodies including hearing aid domes are often easily removed through microsuction. If you suspect a foreign body in the ear, please contact Vital Hearing as our audiologists will guide you appropriately if it is treatable in the clinic or if it requires further referral.
